This chart describes public opinion of how higher education is doing. The data is from Pew Research Center and shows that public opinion of higher education is dropping. In September 2025, 3,445 people were surveyed for this study. Each topic is an important area higher education is expected to help with. As shown on the graph, most people feel that colleges fail to do a good job at affordability, developing critical thinking skills, preparing students for jobs, and mental health support. This could be potentially problematic for the Springfield Area and the growth of it. Springfield is a college town with multiple universities throughout the city. With public opinion of higher education dropping, and people losing faith in the system, enrollment rates could begin to drop. Which could result in less and less people moving to Springfield for school, and even staying after graduation. Which could ultimately lead to a stall in growth for the city and the economy.
